Signs of Optimism for Welsh Sheep Sector

Sheep numbers in Wales are on the increase after a sustainedperiod of decline. Welsh Assembly figures show the total number of sheep and lambs increased from 8.238m in 2009 to 8.244m last year, with breeding ewe numbers up 3% over the same period to 4.1m.

Although the growth in breeding ewe numbers was relatively slight, it has been welcomed by the red meat industry in Wales. Red meat levy body, Hybu Cig Cymru, says it reflects optimism in the long-term future for the sector and should have a positive impact on the size of the lamb crop in 2011.

The Welsh Assembly figures showed cow and pig numbers also increased during 2010.

Beef farmers increased cattle by 2% to 242,000 head, bringing the herd size back to the 2008 level. Breeding pig numbers leapt by a massive 25% to more than 4,000.

John Richards, HCC's industry information officer, described the figures as "very encouraging" and demonstrated that there was growing confidence among farmers.

"While the Welsh sheep flock has not grown dramatically over the past 12 months, the increase in the number of breeding ewes being retained should bring a significant boost to the industry in 2011," he said.
