The winter of 2009 / 2010 was the worst in 30 years. Now forecasters at the Met Office are predicting cold conditions later this week.
The change will see the return of overnight frosts and showery rain in many eastern regions of the UK, with a wintry mix over the hills. Temperatures are expected to fall with eastern parts of the country the most likely to see any wintry weather.
Met Office Chief Forecaster, Frank Saunders, said: “Early indications are that there might well be some snow as we head towards the weekend (27/28 Nov), however, it is too early to say exactly where and when.”
Recalling last years long winter, the NFU is advising members to prepare for the possibility that the cold weather will be sustained. The main items to plan for are animal feed, heating oil and gas along with adequate grit supplies and snow ploughing arrangements to get to the main roads and any livestock that are kept away from the farm in other sites or on overwintered grazing. It is also worth discussing the contingencies for milk and egg collection with your buyers and processors.
Drivers are reminded that they should carry out simple vehicle checks before they set out, carry a severe weather emergency kit and warm clothes in their vehicles, monitor the traffic and weather conditions, and plan their journeys.
